We caught up with New York photographer Matt Clark about this amazing run of swell. Small Q & A / Gallery below.
NYSEA – What did you focus on this swell, surf, bodyboard, shoot ?
Matt – Swell was sick ! It didn’t end ! I have photos from almost everyday from September 21-October 7!! I shot the entire time, I bodyboarded 2 times the whole swell. One day when it was really windy and I had to go to a wedding in the afternoon and on the last day of swell. Got a couple good barrels!
NYSEA – Whats your overall take on the swell itself ?
Matt – The swell itself was in the good range, I tend to like the big medium period swells or even a massive winds well because it’s peakier than groundswell. That being said we had a lot of north winds which groomed the swell great for when the wind went straight offshore one morning and it was just perfect. The size of the swell itself was in the medium range so perfect for barrels and quality surfing, you could really show what you were capable of doing on waves, it wasn’t such a large swell that you were dying on the paddle out or just trying to survive a section. The fact that it was warm out really made it extra noteworthy!
